The awards recognise the outstanding contribution both players made to their county's performances in the championship throughout May.
Benny Coulter gave an exceptional display in the Ulster SFC quarter-final between Down and Donegal where he captained his side to a hard-fought victory. The experienced attacker finished the game with four points and a vital goal scored in extra-time, bringing his side into the next round of the Championship.
Ger Farragher was awarded the hurling title for the second successive month having also received the Opel GPA Hurling Player of the League Award. Farragher's impressive form in the league has continued into the championship. He played a pivotal role in Galway's clash against Wexford, finishing as the game's top scorer with 13 points.
Chairman of the Opel/GPA Football Selection Committee, Martin McHugh, wasn't the least bit surprised to see Benny Coulter selected by his fellow players: "Though it was Benny who finally killed off my own county's Ulster championship challenge this year, I have to salute his wonderful performance. He was a true leader on the day and kicked some exceptional scores. His finish for the goal in the second period of extra time was proof if it were needed, that he is one of the game's outstanding forwards."
Chairman of the Hurling Selection Committee Donal O'Grady said "Ger's consistency of performance during the league marked him apart and he has carried that form into the championship playing a pivotal role once again for Galway during their clash with Wexford. Ger's contribution is far more than his excellent dead-ball striking, he continues to pull the strings for Galway and I think it's a measure of his ability that the players have voted for him for a second successive month."
Dessie Farrell, Gaelic Players Association Chief Executive, added: "It's not often we have the same winner two months in a row and I congratulate Ger Farragher for being selected by his hurling peers once again which is a wonderful achievement. Benny Coulter's display against Donegal was that of a man on the top of his game. Championship football today can be very difficult for forwards with defences more organised than ever but Benny proved that when you have the talent and drive, you can unlock the door to success. Thanks to Opel for their continued support and to all the players who voted for the May winners."
Aislinn Connolly of Opel Ireland said: "Opel Ireland congratulates Benny Coulter and Ger Farragher on winning the Opel GPA Player of the Month Awards for May 2010. Both players have been rightly recognised by their peers for the outstanding performances in recent weeks. It has been an exciting start to the championship and we look forward to a fantastic summer of sport ahead."
